Want to learn more about what the Bible says about mental health? The issue of mental health is increasingly relevant in today’s environment. People from every spectrum of the human experience are struggling with anxiety, depression, and emotional distress, and so many are looking for answers. As people of faith, the Bible addresses the issues we struggle with and the hope for healing we seek. God wants our whole self—spirit, body, and mind.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This verse comforts us that God is aware of our suffering and is willing to help us through it. The troubles of life can seem so heavy, but the Lord asks us to put those burdens at His feet. 1 Peter 5:7 – The apostle Peter tells us to “cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” Prayer and faith help us to find peace and strength in the storms of life.
Experiencing struggles with mental illness can feel isolating, but God designed us to be embodied and live in community. Galatians 6:2 gives us the admonition to “carry each other’s burdens,” a reminder of the strength of fellowship and support. Whether it’s a trusted friend, family member, or church leader, feeling heard will lighten your burden and give you hope. Reaching out for help with mental health issues is not a failure of faith — it is a prudent and responsible course of action. That is why the Bible talks so much about the necessity of seeking counsel. Proverbs 11:14 tells us, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” This combination can produce the most healing and restorative results for people.
Here at The Life Shift Church, we are here for you and to let you know that you are not alone on this journey. Healing does happen, through God’s love, community support and wise counsel. Keep in mind, mental health is more than medical, it’s a spiritual process that God is willing to tote along your journey with you.
